#32 - Blur

It’s amazing what even a blur can inspire,

I realised it as I looked at a window,

A window I looked at and not just through.

I saw the dust on its pane, the scratches that marred its surface,

Even a faint reflection of within,

And a blurred background of grey, green and blue.

But all it takes is a slight shift—

A shift of focus, a change in seeing—

That throws up a lot more to see.

The blue becomes the infinite sky,

The grey resolves into everything we’ve built,

And the greens are the leftover nature without which we wouldn’t be.

I see the stage these set for everything we do,

A stage we ourselves seem to be intent on destroying.

I also see what makes this acceptable to our collective mind,

This suicidal sabotage of our own safety net.

It is a manifestation of the same short-sightedness,

Except not in the three dimensions, but in the fourth, of time.

We live for the near future,

Beyond which we seem unable to see.

Our life until we die seems our limit to comprehend.

Beyond a while we seem to be oblivious.

Or worse, we're stuck in an ignorant optimism,

Convinced the good times will never end.

A shift of focus can do wonders for this too,

And let us see much more and further than we think.

Maybe if we all can work towards this change,

We can still turn this around in time.

I, for one, am in no hurry to end this ride,

This one journey we all have, wild and strange.

I think once we learn to see it’s hard to forget,

And to keep a fog that’s lifted won’t seem a great choice.

But we could still use the blur at will,

To help us think differently if need be.

But it would be by choice and not by compulsion,

No longer a flaw, but a skill.

I thought I was looking at a normal window,

But it ended up a window into so much more.

The spark for a thought process about all we’ve done,

And a new lesson in how and what we see.

So I guess, it is time for a new quote now,

To see or not to see, that is the question.
